MENA organizations mull idea of bank to fund water projects

AMMAN — There have been requests to establish an international bank to fund water projects, in cooperation with regional and international organizations and institutions in the MENA region recently, in light of challenges to water-poor countries in the region, especially Jordan, according to Al-Ghad news.اضافة اعلان

Jordanian experts told Al-Ghad that the success of establishing the banks depended on if the projects being funded would be decided on by the concerned countries.

A specialized international report published by Directions Magazine, stressed the importance of improving internationals efforts to spot and determine the levels of groundwater, especially in areas with a high risk of drought.   

The report, entitled, “Water Data Power” also stressed the importance of ongoing satellite missions in monitoring the groundwater, rising sea levels, and water and climate changes.

For her part, former secretary general of the ministry of water and irrigation, Maysoon Al-Zoubi, told Al-Ghad that a key factor for the success of an international water bank would be for it to remain “neutral”.

Former minister of water and irrigation, Hazim Al-Naser said that “97 percent of those interested in the water sector have indicated that the bank is very important for the Middle East in particular.”
