Speaking at the opening of the 10th Regional Forum of the Union for the Mediterranean, co-chaired by Jordan and the European Union, Safadi called on all partners to support Syria in its path toward democracy, noting that it has regained its place within the Union for the Mediterranean.
He stressed that “Syria’s success is a success for all.”
Turning to the state of peace in the Middle East, Safadi warned that “the Barcelona Process for cooperation and peace is facing a very serious threat.”
He added that “the promises of the Barcelona Process over the past 30 years have not been fulfilled because we continue to see the rights of the Palestinian people disregarded,” emphasizing that “there is one victim and one aggressive power… the Palestinians are the victims, and Israel is violating their rights.”
Safadi highlighted global consensus on the need to stop the bloodshed in Palestine, pointing to the recognition of the State of Palestine by more than 140 countries, and stressing the necessity for Palestinians to enjoy “their dignity and freedom on their national soil so they can live in peace side by side with Israel.”
He reiterated that the two-state solution is the only viable path forward, criticizing Israel’s rejection of international law: “Israel does not want to acknowledge international law… it does not want to recognize the rights of the Palestinian people and is stripping them of their humanity.”
Safadi warned that “international law is at risk because it is not being respected.”
He also stressed the need for Israel to comply with the ceasefire in Lebanon and to withdraw from Lebanese and Syrian territory, urging EU member states to work together to uphold international law and consolidate peace and stability in the Mediterranean region.
“We in Jordan are committed to working with everyone to achieve the goal of peace and to strengthen cooperation among nations… and we are very proud of our partnership with the European Union,” he said.
“We cannot continue as if nothing has happened… we must ensure that the peoples of the Mediterranean enjoy dignity in their respective countries as we move forward with future efforts.”
