The number of dog bite cases in 2022 reached 5,138, according to Al-Mamlaka TV.

Treatment availableHawarat confirmed that treatment for people who were bitten is available at the ministry, as well as the anti-rabies vaccine.

The World Health Organization states that once clinical symptoms appear, rabies is virtually 100 percent fatal. Domestic dogs are responsible for rabies virus transmission to humans in up to 99 percent of cases.

Legislation on animal welfareThe Ministry of Agriculture stated earlier that its legislation on animal welfare includes cooperation and coordination with relevant authorities to care for animals and prevent cruelty to them in accordance with Sharia Law and the five principles of animal welfare.

This system, they said, is consistent with what is stated in the Jordanian Penal Code, which contains more than one article that prohibits abuse of animals in general, as stated in Article (472) of Law No. (16) of 1960 and its amendments.

The ministry's role regarding stray dogs and animals in general is according to the law that concerns health and veterinary aspects.

Responsibility of local administrationThe control of stray dogs and their shelter is the role of the local administration and Greater Amman Municipality (GAM), according to the ministry.

The Municipal Council is responsible for the supervision of dogs and dealing with their straying and prevention of their dangers, and preparing places for their shelter within the limits of the municipality's area, as per the Local Administration Law, it said.

The law also stipulated that the municipality is responsible for combating insects, rodents, reptiles, and dangerous disease carriers among them, and supervising dogs, licensing them, dealing with strays, and preparing places for their shelter.

ABC program for controlling stray dogs
GAM deals with stray dogs through the application of the ABC program to control stray dogs, it said in a previous statement.

The program collects stray dogs from their locations, then neuters them by specialized doctors and vaccinates them with necessary vaccines, and returns them to the collection locations to reduce their numbers and ensure they do not transfer diseases.

The municipality dealt with about 4,000 observations during the past six months, and the program was extended to other municipalities, with dealing with biting cases through the Ministry of Health.
