Int'l boxing association opens independent probe into Swaisat death

AMMAN — The International Boxing Association (AIBA) has announced an independent process to investigate the death of Jordanian boxer Rashed Al-Swaisat.اضافة اعلان

The young athlete succumbed to a blow to the head while competing in the recent AIBA Youth World Championships.

In a statement on Friday, the federation said: "Following the sad passing of Rashed Al-Swaisat, AIBA has announced an independent process to investigate and review the circumstances of his participation in the championships, his injury, his treatment and the protocols followed on that occasion".

The association said that although the "internal reviews conducted with the currently available information have concluded that AIBA’s protocols were properly followed, a wider investigation with independent expertise will consider all available materials, including those of public authorities. Detailed terms of reference and expertise will be announced in due course."

Deaths in boxing are "extremely rare", the statement added and "AIBA is determined to ensure that the circumstances of this tragedy are fully and completely clarified and that any and all lessons are learned, in order to maintain its total commitment to the wellbeing of boxers." 

It concluded that the association "will continue to do everything it can to support Rashed’s family, friends and teammates at this immensely difficult time."
