A total of 83 patents were registered in Jordan from the beginning of the year through the end of August, including two local patents.
According to data from the Industrial Property Protection Directorate at the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Supply, 4,875 trademarks had been registered by the end of August, while 3,760 trademarks were renewed during the same period.
The directorate also renewed 364 patents, granted 14 trademark-use licenses, approved changes to the names and addresses of 966 industrial property rights, and transferred ownership of 695.
Under the law, a patent is defined as any creative idea developed by an inventor in any field of technology, relating to a product, a manufacturing process, or both, and capable of providing a solution to a specific problem in any such field.
Patent registration covers the procedures related to patent applications submitted to the relevant office, beginning with guidance provided to inventors on how to file an application and ending with the issuance of the final patent certificate.
The procedures also include a range of technical and formal processes to examine applications and ensure that they meet all legal requirements. They further cover procedures related to patent applications carried out to meet the needs of third parties, excluding applicants, agents and inventors, such as publication in the Official Gazette and procedures for accessing the register.
A trademark is defined as any visible sign used, or intended to be used, by a person to distinguish their goods, products or services from those of others.
