OpenAI has introduced a new feature in ChatGPT that allows users to lock selected conversations and hide them from their regular chat history, in a move aimed at enhancing privacy, particularly when a device is shared or a screen is being viewed by others.

The feature uses a separate four-digit account PIN that is independent of the lock code for a phone or computer. On supported devices, users can also enable Face ID, Touch ID or another supported device authentication method.
Once a conversation is locked, it is moved to a dedicated Locked Chats section and no longer appears in the main chat list or regular search results. Access requires the account PIN or supported device authentication.
The lock is tied to the user's OpenAI account, meaning locked conversations remain protected when the same account is accessed from other devices. Device authentication, however, is configured separately on each device.
The feature does not mean that locked conversations are separately encrypted or stored in an independent encrypted vault. It primarily prevents direct access to sensitive conversations and removes them from the normal ChatGPT interface. Locking a chat also does not change its retention period or the user's model-improvement settings.
OpenAI is rolling out the feature gradually, so the “Lock chat” option may not be available to all users at the same time. When available, it can be accessed through the three-dot menu next to an eligible conversation.
