The American Stroke Association has issued new guidelines stating that rehabilitation should begin within 48 hours of a stroke.
Physicians affiliated with the association, in a report published in the journal Stroke, confirmed that the rehabilitation process varies from patient to patient, depending on the symptoms they're experiencing and their mental health status.

The new guidelines state that rehabilitation should begin as soon as the patient's condition stabilizes, with the ideal window for starting being within roughly 48 hours of the stroke. Studies indicate that strokes can occur at any age, and that around 800,000 Americans suffer a stroke each year, with stroke ranking as the fourth leading cause of death in the United States.
The guidelines also stress the need to monitor stroke patients' mental health, since conditions like depression, stress, and anxiety can hinder the treatment and rehabilitation process.
Dr. Lori Richards, an assistant professor at the University of Utah, said: "Rehabilitation after a stroke is a complex process, since strokes affect the skills a person relies on to earn a living, as well as most of the routine activities they carry out, such as motor and cognitive abilities, and the ability to communicate with others," according to what was published on Sky News Arabia.
Researchers noted the importance of stroke patients returning to their normal lives, such as going back to work and caring for their children, while addressing certain symptoms related to difficulty sleeping, pain, and other changes that may arise in their daily routine.
Richards added: "Recovery after a stroke is more than just regaining physical strength and abilities; it's an ongoing process involving coping with the psychological changes that follow a major health crisis, adapting to new challenges, and moving forward with a renewed sense of resilience, flexibility, and drive to achieve one's goals."
