During the meeting, arrangements for moving forward with the project’s tender procedures and implementation mechanisms according to the approved timeline were discussed. The project aims to achieve developmental and environmental objectives while promoting cultural heritage and ensuring sustainable tourism in Petra.
This initiative is the latest in a series of U.S.-funded programs supporting Jordan’s tourism sector. Over the past decades, the U.S. government has provided more than $124 million to preserve cultural heritage sites and develop tourism in the Kingdom.
The project will support the Authority’s efforts to elevate Petra as a UNESCO World Heritage Site by diversifying tourist services, improving the tourism environment, increasing the site’s capacity to accommodate growing visitor numbers, and enhancing management and operational efficiency.
Additionally, the project aims to improve accessibility and visitor flow within Petra while applying modern environmental standards to protect the archaeological site and its natural surroundings.
The project aligns with Jordan’s economic modernization vision by focusing on sustainable development, environmental resilience, and leveraging joint expertise between the U.S. Agency for International Development and the Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority to create a more competitive and prosperous tourism sector in the Kingdom.
Dr. Fares Al-Breizat, Chairman of the Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority, stated that the $15 million “Green Growth Tourism” project aims to develop environmentally friendly tourism services in the Petra Archaeological Park, ensuring the site’s sustainability, preserving its cultural and civilizational uniqueness, and enhancing its status as a World Heritage Site.
Al-Breizat added, in the presence of the Board of Commissioners, that the Authority will begin implementing the project in cooperation with the U.S. Embassy in Jordan. The initiative will enhance the visitor experience in Petra, improve service quality, support local communities, and boost economic growth in the region, demonstrating the importance of protecting cultural heritage while promoting sustainable development principles.
