A court in Zambia has sentenced two men to two years of hard labor for attempting to use magic to kill the country’s president. The Mozambican citizen Justin Mapolisi Kandonde and the local village leader Leonard Ferry were arrested in December with magical charms, including a live chameleon.

Police said the pair planned to use the charms to harm President Hakainde Hichilema. They were charged with claiming knowledge of magic and possession of magical charms. Judge Fine Mayambo in the capital Lusaka stated that “the motive behind the crime was to kill the head of state.”
He added: “The convicted men were not only enemies of the head of state but of all Zambians. Therefore, they are sentenced to 24 months of hard labor from the date of their arrest.”
The prosecution indicated that the two acted under the influence and financial support of the brother of opposition MP Emmanuel “JJ” Banda, who is currently on trial for theft, attempted murder, and prison escape.
