According to the official UN News website, Guterres made the remarks in a recorded video message delivered during the second meeting of senior officials to review progress on the Global Refugee Forum, which began yesterday, Monday, in Geneva, Switzerland, and continues until Wednesday. The meeting is jointly organized by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Swiss government.

The UN Secretary-General noted that “the first international consensus on migration adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2018 remains a guiding framework for moving forward.”

He added, “We must strengthen the integration of refugees into society and promote their self-reliance as a dignified way to unleash their human potential.”

Guterres stressed the importance of supporting local economies and reducing dependence on aid, alongside ensuring the safe return of people to their homes, as happened with one million Syrians last year. (Petra)
