AMMAN — The number of people who lost their jobs during the COVID-19 in 2020 increased by 170 percent to 191,000 employees, Al-Ghad News reported.اضافة اعلان

Al-Ghad said the figures in a survey released every two years by the Department of Statistics showed that 71,000 people lost their jobs in 2018.

The survey said the number of job opportunities created in 2020 reached 122,000, compared with 110,000 jobs created in 2018.

These numbers correspond with unemployment figures, which rose to 24.7 percent in 2020, compared with 18.7 percent in 2018. Other figures showed that unemployment fell by 1.4 percent to 23.3 percent in 2021.

The figure underlined that the national economy was unable to generate jobs to meet a rising demand, even prior to the pandemic. Following the pandemic, the situation worsened due to low economic growth, which led to a decline in business activity and consequently to layoffs.
