Jordan has intensified its diplomatic efforts and contacts with a number of Arab and friendly countries and international organizations to discuss rapidly evolving developments in the region, particularly the dangerous deterioration in the occupied West Bank resulting from illegal Israeli measures, as well as efforts to consolidate the ceasefire between the United States and Iran and end the escalation through a political process that ensures lasting security and stability.
The diplomatic push included meetings and calls by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi with several counterparts and international officials, as part of Jordan’s continued efforts to strengthen regional and international coordination and advance political solutions to crises threatening the region’s security and stability.
Safadi held a series of meetings and calls with foreign ministers and officials from Syria, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Türkiye, Canada, Indonesia, Somalia and Malta. He also met with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres. Discussions focused on the repercussions of regional developments, the dangerous situation in the occupied Palestinian territories, and international efforts to de-escalate tensions and prevent the conflict from expanding.
The Palestinian issue was at the forefront of Jordan’s diplomatic efforts. Jordan stressed the need to halt the dangerous deterioration in the occupied West Bank and put an end to illegal Israeli measures that threaten security and stability and undermine prospects for achieving a just and comprehensive peace.
Jordan warned of the dangers posed by continued Israeli violations in the occupied West Bank, including escalating settler violence, settlement expansion, the confiscation of Palestinian land, violations of the sanctity of Al-Haram Al-Sharif/Al-Aqsa Mosque, and attempts to alter the historical and legal status quo in Jerusalem and its Muslim and Christian holy sites.
Jordan stressed the need for effective international action to compel Israel, the occupying power, to halt all violations of international law and international humanitarian law. It warned that the continuation of such measures would fuel further tension and violence, risk an escalation of the situation in the West Bank, and undermine all prospects for peace.
Jordan reaffirmed its longstanding position on the Palestinian cause, stressing the need to end the occupation and support the Palestinian people’s right to establish an independent and sovereign state along the June 4, 1967 lines, with East Jerusalem as its capital, as the only path toward a just and lasting peace in accordance with international law and relevant international resolutions.
Jordan also stressed the need to preserve the historical and legal status quo in Jerusalem and its holy sites, reiterating that Al-Haram Al-Sharif/Al-Aqsa Mosque is a place of worship exclusively for Muslims. It emphasized that the Jerusalem Awqaf and Al-Aqsa Mosque Affairs Department, affiliated with Jordan’s Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs and Holy Places, is the sole authority with exclusive legal jurisdiction to administer the compound and regulate access to it.
Regarding the Gaza Strip, Jordan stressed during its international contacts and discussions the need to implement all provisions aimed at consolidating stability and ensuring the sufficient and sustainable delivery of humanitarian aid to the Strip, which continues to face a humanitarian catastrophe.
Jordan also emphasized support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) and the importance of enabling it to continue providing vital services to Palestinian refugees in accordance with its UN mandate.
Jordan also discussed international efforts to end the broader regional escalation, stressing the importance of maintaining the ceasefire between the United States and Iran and resuming negotiations toward a comprehensive agreement that addresses all causes of tension, guarantees freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz in accordance with international law, and ensures lasting security and stability.
Discussions also addressed developments in Syria, with Jordan emphasizing the importance of supporting Syria’s unity, security, stability and sovereignty, as well as the need to halt attacks and interventions that threaten its security. The talks also covered several regional and international issues of mutual concern.
Throughout his meetings and calls, Safadi underscored Jordan’s strong fraternal relations and partnerships with Arab and friendly countries, as well as their shared commitment to expanding cooperation and coordination on various issues in ways that serve mutual interests and support regional security and stability.
Jordan’s intensified diplomatic efforts reflect the Kingdom’s active role, under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah II, in advancing political and diplomatic efforts to safeguard the region’s interests, halt escalation, support the Palestinian people, and defend the two-state solution as the path toward a just and comprehensive peace.
