The agreement reflects the two countries’ commitment to strengthening their bilateral partnership, expanding cooperation and exchanging expertise and experience in priority environmental and climate-related areas.

The memorandum was signed as part of a series of agreements and memoranda of understanding aimed at broadening cooperation and partnership between Jordan and China across various fields during the King’s visit, which included a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The memorandum establishes a framework for cooperation between Jordan and China in environmental protection and climate change, taking into account the policies and socioeconomic circumstances of both countries. It also supports their efforts toward sustainable development and the transition to a green, low-carbon economy.

Areas of cooperation covered by the memorandum include environmental management and planning policies, biodiversity conservation, environmental pollution prevention and control, marine environmental protection, solid waste management, including plastic waste, climate change mitigation and adaptation, environmental impact assessments, and environmental awareness and education.

The agreement also enables the two sides to develop practical cooperation through the exchange of policies, expertise and experience; joint research and studies; visits by experts, scientists and delegations; and the organization of workshops, training programs and joint meetings. These efforts are expected to support knowledge transfer, capacity building and the development of innovative solutions to environmental and climate challenges.

Jordanian Minister of Environment Ayman Suleiman said signing the memorandum represents an important step toward strengthening environmental cooperation between Jordan and China and reflects Jordan’s commitment to expanding its international partnerships and benefiting from modern expertise, experience and technology in addressing environmental and climate challenges.

He said the Ministry of Environment looks forward to translating the memorandum into practical cooperation programs, projects and activities in the coming period. These initiatives will support national environmental priorities, promote the green and circular economies, improve waste management, reduce pollution, protect biodiversity, strengthen climate action and build national capacities.

Suleiman noted that Jordanian-Chinese environmental cooperation is aligned with national priorities under the Economic Modernisation Vision and its Sustainable Environment pillar, which seek to promote sustainability, improve resource efficiency and support the green transition, while strengthening Jordan’s ability to address the impacts of climate change and meet its environmental and climate commitments and targets.

Under the memorandum, Jordan’s Ministry of Environment and China’s Ministry of Ecology and Environment will be responsible for implementing the agreement and coordinating related activities. Both sides will appoint coordinators to follow up on implementation and strengthen communication and cooperation.

The memorandum underscores the depth and growing strength of Jordanian-Chinese relations and the two countries’ commitment to advancing cooperation in environmental protection, climate action and sustainable development in a way that serves their shared interests, protects natural resources and improves quality of life for current and future generations.
