Dead Sea, Ma’in areas to be planted with jojoba trees

AMMAN — Minister of Agriculture Khaled Hneifat on Thursday inspected a number of afforestation projects in the Hamra Ma’in area and the Dead Sea, using jojoba trees, Al-Ghad news reported. Hneifat said that jojoba trees, characterized by high tolerance to drought and soil salinity, has been planted on a 200-dunum plot of land, and that 100,000 more seedlings will be imported to expand the forested areas in the Hamra Ma’in area and the Dead Sea. He added that jojoba contributes to the economy, as its oil is used in the cosmetic industry, which should encourage farmers to invest in this cultivation. Hneifat said that water resources in the Hamra Ma’in area ensure the success of jojoba forests, stressing that work is under way for the afforestation of 1,000 dunums to serve the local community. Hneifat said that jojoba trees, characterized by high tolerance to drought and soil salinity, has been planted on a 200-dunum plot of land, and that 100,000 more seedlings will be imported to expand the forested areas in the Hamra Ma’in area and the Dead Sea.

He added that jojoba contributes to the economy, as its oil is used in the cosmetic industry, which should encourage farmers to invest in this cultivation.

Hneifat said that water resources in the Hamra Ma’in area ensure the success of jojoba forests, stressing that work is under way for the afforestation of 1,000 dunums to serve the local community.
