According to Netanyahu’s office—as reported by Israel Hayom and translated by Ammon—the prime minister made the decision after interviewing several candidates, ultimately selecting Maj. Gen. Gofman to lead the Mossad’s intelligence and special operations in the State of Israel.
Gofman will succeed Mossad Director David Barnea, whose five-year term ends in June 2026.
Maj. Gen. Gofman has held numerous operational and command positions in the Israel Defense Forces, including: fighter and commander in the Armored Corps, battalion commander of the 75th Battalion in the 7th Brigade, senior military officer in the “Gash” Formation (36th Division), the Etzion Brigade, and the 7th Brigade. He also served as commander of the “Habashan” Division (210), commander of the National Ground Training Center, head of the government operations headquarters in the territories, and currently serves as the military secretary to Prime Minister Netanyahu.
Gofman has maintained ongoing contact with all Israeli intelligence agencies, particularly the Mossad.
