Late last year, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution—supported by 137 states, opposed by 12, and with 22 abstentions—requesting an advisory opinion from the ICJ concerning the presence and activities of the United Nations, including its agencies, bodies, other international organizations, and third states, in the occupied Palestinian territory and related areas.

Prior to this, the Court—the principal judicial organ of the United Nations—had issued an advisory opinion deeming Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian territories unlawful and calling for an end to the occupation within one year. –(Petra)
