Jordan has been affected since the early hours of Monday by a weather depression centered east of the island of Cyprus. Rain is expected to be heavy at times in the north and center, accompanied by thunderstorms and hail, according to a report by the Jordan Meteorological Department.

By midday, rainfall is expected to extend to southern areas of the Kingdom and to be intermittently heavy in the southwestern regions, leading to the formation of flash floods in valleys and low-lying areas, including the Jordan Valley and the Dead Sea. Westerly winds will be active, with strong gusts at times reaching speeds of 70–80 km/h, raising dust particularly in desert areas that have not received rainfall, resulting in a noticeable reduction in horizontal visibility. Gradually during the night hours, rainfall intensity and wind speed are expected to decrease.

Maximum and minimum temperatures are forecast to range between 9–6°C in eastern Amman, 7–4°C in western Amman, 6–3°C in the northern highlands, 5–2°C in the Sharah highlands, 13–5°C in the Badia regions, 10–5°C in the plains, 19–9°C in the northern Jordan Valley, 22–13°C in the southern Jordan Valley, 21–11°C at the Dead Sea, and 22–12°C in the Gulf of Aqaba.

Flash Flood Warnings

The Meteorological Department has warned of the risk of flash floods in valleys and low-lying areas in northern and central Jordan and the southwestern regions, including the Jordan Valley and the Dead Sea. It also cautioned against strong winds and accompanying gusts, reduced horizontal visibility due to dust in the Badia regions—occasionally reaching near-zero on desert roads—as well as poor visibility caused by fog and low clouds touching the ground, especially over mountainous highlands and plains. The department further warned of slippery roads during rainfall, urging the public not to cross areas of accumulated rainwater and to secure loose objects.

The Public Security Directorate renewed its warnings to citizens due to the expected weather conditions in the coming days, as the Kingdom is affected by a weather depression accompanied by rain and strong winds, which may include thunderstorms and hail, potentially leading to flash floods in some areas, according to official weather bulletins.

Citizens were urged to exercise caution, stay away from low-lying areas and valleys to avoid the risk of flash floods, drive carefully to prevent skidding, and secure objects that could be blown away by strong winds.

The Directorate also emphasized the safe use of heating appliances, the importance of supervising children, ventilating homes regularly, and turning off heaters before sleeping. It confirmed its full readiness to deal with any emergencies and called on the public to follow weather updates and adhere to safety guidelines to ensure public safety.

Another Weather Depression on Thursday

According to the Meteorological Department, temperatures are expected to rise slightly on Tuesday, while remaining below seasonal averages. The weather will be cold in most regions and mild in the Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea, and Aqaba, with clouds appearing at various altitudes. There is a slight chance during the morning hours of light, scattered showers in parts of northern and central Jordan. Winds will be moderate southwesterlies, occasionally becoming active.

At night, the weather will be stable and colder, with fog forming over mountainous highlands and plains, reducing horizontal visibility. Winds will be light southeasterlies.

On Wednesday, temperatures are expected to rise slightly again, with cold conditions continuing in most regions and mild weather in the Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea, and Aqaba. Medium- and high-level clouds will appear, with moderate southwesterly winds becoming active at times. Nighttime weather will be partly cloudy and generally colder, with moderate southwesterly winds.

Preliminary numerical model analyses indicate that on Thursday, the Kingdom is expected to be gradually affected by another weather depression centered over Cyprus, accompanied by a cold and moist air mass. Temperatures will drop slightly, and the weather will be cold and partly cloudy, turning cloudy at times. Rain is expected in northern Jordan, extending in the afternoon to parts of the central and eastern regions, occasionally accompanied by thunderstorms. Winds will be westerly to southwesterly and active.
