You may have noticed that tech companies are becoming increasingly insistent on pushing you to use artificial intelligence features, even when you aren't interested in them. New buttons appear within interfaces, and pop-up windows attempt to persuade you to try AI-powered tools.

In Google Docs, for instance, the company has started displaying a large "Gemini" bar at the bottom of the screen for some users. The feature first appeared for a limited group before rolling out to more accounts in recent weeks; as a result, you might see it in your account while another user does not.
If you are one of the users who got this bar and do not want it on your screen, you can easily hide it.
Click on "Gemini" in the menu bar, hover over "Bottom bar preferences", and select "Turn off".
The bar will then disappear from the bottom of the screen.
How to Get Rid of "Gemini" Features More Broadly?
If you want to go beyond simply hiding the bottom bar and wish to minimize the presence of AI features within Google Docs, you have several options. However, the steps vary between personal Google accounts and enterprise/institutional accounts using Google Workspace.
If you are using a Workspace account provided by your employer, your system administrator determines which AI features appear to you. In this case, you cannot disable all of these features yourself, and you may need to contact your organization's IT department.
If you are using a personal account, you have greater control—though the setting you need is located in a place you might not expect: inside Gmail settings.
Start from Gmail Settings
Open your Gmail account, click the Settings icon in the top corner, and select "See all settings".
Under the "General" tab, scroll down until you reach the "Smart features" option.
Uncheck this option. (Google will display a message attempting to persuade you not to disable it.)
After applying the change, return to your Google Docs tab and reload the page.
Interestingly, this option within Gmail settings makes no explicit reference to Google Docs at all.
However, keep in mind that disabling it also turns off several smart features in Gmail, including grammar suggestions, auto-correct, Smart Compose, Smart Reply, and nudges/reminders.
It also disables Gmail's spell-checker, though your browser’s built-in spell-checking tool will continue to function. Therefore, if you rely on these tools in your email, this option might not be suitable for you just to get rid of Gemini in Google Docs.
What Happens After Disabling It?
If these smart features are not important to you, you can return to Google Docs. You should find that the Gemini menu, the voice button, and the AI toolbar at the bottom of the screen have disappeared. The Gemini button in the upper right corner might remain, but it is less intrusive than the other tools and can be ignored more easily.
Nevertheless, there is no guarantee that this method will remain unchanged in the future, as Google has altered similar settings and options in the past.
Another Option via the "Chrome" Browser
If the previous method does not work for you, or if you do not want to disable all Gemini-powered smart features, another option is using a Google Chrome extension called "Bye Bye Gemini".
When installed, it hides Google's AI elements across the productivity services you use in the browser, including Gmail, Google Docs, and Google Drive.
The extension relies on CSS styling to render these elements invisible within the browser, and it can also hide AI Overviews from Google Search results.
Disabling Gemini does not necessarily mean you reject using artificial intelligence altogether. You might prefer using Claude, ChatGPT, or a locally run model via Ollama—or you might simply prefer working without AI tools entirely.
In either case, you can currently reduce Gemini's presence or eliminate most of its elements within Google services, even if the method is not completely straightforward.
As for hiding AI Overviews from Google Search results, it remains a more complex task. One available method is using a Chrome or Safari extension that forces the search engine to display the "Web" tab by default for every search.
