Argentina’s national team players have expressed their full support for head coach Lionel Scaloni to remain in charge as he considers his future with the team.

“Scaloni is one of the most important coaches for me. He was the one who gave me my first opportunity, and I hope he stays with us,” midfielder Nicolás Paz said upon arriving in Buenos Aires to join the national team’s training camp.
Scaloni’s contract expires in December, and he hinted at the possibility of leaving after Argentina lost 1-0 to Spain in the World Cup final in July.
The Argentine coach is currently negotiating with the country’s football association over a possible contract extension.
Veteran defender Cristian Romero also said: “I hope Scaloni stays because he is a very important pillar in building this national team, so we want him to continue.”
Other players expressed similar views. Defender Leonardo Balerdi said keeping Scaloni would be an advantage, while Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni added: “Scaloni has given everything to the national team in recent years and has brought happiness to the Argentine people.”
Goalkeeper Juan Musso said: “We value Scaloni highly because of the successes and achievements he has delivered,” while highlighting the team’s strong bond and unity.
Since taking charge eight years ago, Scaloni, 48, has led Argentina to several major international titles.
Scaloni guided Argentina to the 2022 World Cup title and back-to-back Copa América championships in 2021 and 2024. Overall, he has managed the team in 104 matches, recording 76 wins, 18 draws and 10 defeats.
Argentina lost 1-0 to Spain in the World Cup final in July. Before that, Scaloni had led the “Albiceleste” to the longest unbeaten run in Argentina’s history, spanning 36 consecutive matches.
Scaloni has not spoken publicly since returning to Argentina, but he is scheduled to hold a press conference ahead of the friendly against Bolivia, which will be played in the Spanish city of Córdoba.
This month’s international break is expected to be an emotional one as Argentina prepares to play friendly matches against Bolivia, Burkina Faso and Benin between September 30 and October 6.
The final friendly will be played at the Monumental Stadium as Argentina bids farewell to star and captain Lionel Messi in his final appearance after he announced his retirement from international football.
