Scientists analyzed data from research and studies accumulated over the past ten years, finding that polyphenols, anthocyanins, and resveratrol found in blueberries and dark grapes are linked to improved cardiovascular health. The most prominent effect of these substances was observed on the function of the endothelium (the inner lining of blood vessels), which is essential for normal blood flow.
The findings indicated that the benefit was most pronounced among individuals at a higher risk of developing cardiovascular diseases, such as those suffering from high cholesterol, overweight, high blood pressure, or metabolic syndrome. Across multiple studies, the consumption of grapes and blueberries was linked to lowered levels of harmful cholesterol (LDL), improved vascular function, and a reduction in inflammatory markers.
The researchers emphasized that these foods are not a substitute for medication or other preventive measures designed to protect heart health, but they can serve as a beneficial addition to a healthy diet. They recommended paying special attention to dark-colored varieties rich in polyphenols due to their potential protective effect on the cardiovascular system.
Numerous studies also show that blueberries contain antioxidants that help fight inflammation in the body, which positively impacts the health of the heart, arteries, and several other vital organs.
