According to Verywell Health, this hot drink may help you feel better when you are sick, but it will not prevent colds or the flu.
Registered dietitian Christine Carli told the website that apple juice itself has some nutritional value, as it contains polyphenols—plant-based antioxidant compounds that help neutralize free radicals, which play a role in inflammation and immune system function.
Carli added, “If you add honey, you may also gain its antimicrobial benefits, and honey may help reduce the frequency and severity of coughing, especially at night.”
Dietitian Stacy Gulbin explained that warm beverages in general can help soothe a sore throat and that the ingredients of the drink may help you feel better when you are ill.
She continued, “Although it is not exactly an immune-boosting drink, the temperature of a hot beverage may soothe sore throat symptoms. Heat can promote relaxation, reduce throat irritation, and improve congestion.”
She also noted that warm drinks can help thin mucus and encourage drainage, which may temporarily relieve sinus pressure.
The website pointed out that apple juice and honey contain natural sugars, which are beneficial in moderation. However, in large amounts, they may contribute to blood sugar fluctuations and inflammation without providing additional immune benefits.
