Iraq has reached an understanding with the United States to continue receiving shipments of U.S. dollar banknotes, Iraqi government spokesperson Haider Al-Aboudi said Saturday, confirming that a new shipment is expected to arrive in the coming days.
Al-Aboudi told the Iraqi News Agency (INA) that the understanding was reached during Prime Minister Ali Faleh Al-Zaidi’s visit to the United States, noting that it aims to meet legitimate foreign currency needs.
He said the understanding followed progress made by Iraq in strengthening oversight of dollar distribution, regulating its use and curbing the misuse of foreign currency, alongside the expansion of electronic payment methods and the gradual transition toward a digital economy.
The United States resumed some cash-dollar shipments to Iraq in July after a suspension lasting several months, following the halt of a shipment worth around $500 million in April, according to Iraqi officials.
