AMMAN — The Ministry of Labor Sunday said that about 3,893 flexible work permits were issued to Syrian workers in Jordan during 2021, according to Al-Mamlaka TV.اضافة اعلان

Ministry spokesperson Mohammed Al-Zayoud said that flexible work permits are granted to foreign workers, including Syrians, granting them the right to work in “specific occupations”.

He pointed out that the majority of professions in the private sector are reserved to Jordanians, and “expatriate workers are prohibited from working in them”.

The Ministry of Labor grants Syrian laborers specific and temporary work permits, which are renewable, “so that their presence in the labor market is legal and does not violate the provisions of the Labor Law, in order to avoid any legal procedures in this regard”.

“The work permit protects both worker and employer,” said Zayoud.

Since the beginning of 2018, more than 25,000 flexible permits have been issued for Syrians in all sectors, except agriculture, according to the General Federation of Jordanian Trade Unions.

Jordan has hosted more than 1.3 million Syrians since the start of the crisis in 2011; about 67,748 are registered with the UNHCR. There are more than 5 million Syrian refugees in Jordan and neighboring countries.

In 2020, the number of work permits issued to Syrian refugees in Jordan decreased to 38,756, from 47,766 in 2019, a decrease of 18.8 percent, according to UNHCR statistics.

In December 2020, the Council of Ministers approved the extension of its previous decision to correct the situation of illegal Syrian workers, and exempted them from paying for work permits, requiring, in exchange, that they undergo the necessary medical examination before December 31, 2021.

Article 12 of the Labor Law stipulates that “a non-Jordanian worker must obtain a work permit from the minister, or his delegate, before his recruitment or use, and the period of the permit may not exceed one year, renewable, and its duration shall be calculated upon renewal from the date of expiry of the period of the last work permit obtained.”
