A statement on the Canadian government’s website on Wednesday noted that the majority of Syrians still live below the poverty line, with millions in need of humanitarian assistance. It added that Syria’s six-month humanitarian aid program concluded on August 27.

The statement further noted: “Canada will continue providing humanitarian aid to Syria and will keep supporting the political transition process there; therefore, it has decided to extend the sanctions relief until February 2026.”

It is worth noting that the Canadian government had previously eased sanctions on Syria for six months in February to support reconstruction and stability following the fall of the Assad regime late last year.
