The Senate’s Legal Committee approved the draft amendment on Thursday as received from the House of Representatives, during a meeting attended by Minister of Justice Bassam Talhouni and Minister of State for Legal Affairs Fayez Al-Qudah.

The reasons behind the amendments to the National Service Law include organizing provisions related to new legal requirements needed to activate and implement the national service program, defining acceptable cases for deferment, and enabling the General Command of the Jordanian Armed Forces – Arab Army to provide training programs in military centers and institutes for those subject to service. These programs may be recognized by relevant educational institutions as part of university study requirements, in accordance with regulations issued by the Cabinet for this purpose, and may also count toward national service duties and requirements.

Additionally, the amendments eliminate provisions that grant individuals completing national service any hiring preference in ministries, government departments, institutions, companies, or private-sector organizations.
