Jordan’s Land Transport Regulatory Commission said it has been monitoring information circulating on some social media platforms containing inaccurate claims and interpretations regarding ongoing discussions about the operation of smart transportation applications, including allegations that the commission intends to cancel or suspend the “release” feature linked to the operating permits of certain companies.
The “release” feature in ride-hailing applications allows a licensed driver to work with more than one app or transportation company.
In a statement, the commission stressed that these claims are incorrect and that no decision or official direction has been issued regarding the cancellation of the feature. It explained that the current discussions are purely technical and regulatory in nature and fall within its responsibility to oversee operational and regulatory practices in the sector, in line with its legal mandate to regulate the market and maintain a fair and organized competitive environment.
The commission added that the discussion is not about whether to abolish or retain the feature itself, but rather about certain practices associated with its use. According to the commission, in some cases the feature has been used as a tool for irresponsible competition and for gaining market share in ways that do not align with the original regulatory purpose for which it was introduced.
It further explained that the matter is being studied as part of its responsibility to safeguard fair competition and preserve a healthy and well-regulated operating environment.
The commission noted that reviewing regulatory issues and assessing their impact on the market and operators is a normal part of its role in monitoring developments in the sector and ensuring that all parties comply with the applicable regulatory framework in a manner that serves the public interest and supports market stability and sustainability.
It emphasized that any future regulatory review or potential measures, if deemed necessary, would be subject to study and evaluation through established institutional procedures and in consultation with relevant stakeholders, with the aim of enhancing sector efficiency and ensuring fair competition among all operators.
The commission also urged the public to obtain information from official sources and avoid rumors or premature interpretations, reaffirming its commitment to carrying out its regulatory responsibilities professionally and responsibly while supporting the development, stability, and sustainability of the smart transportation sector.
