His Majesty Reiterates Jordan’s Ongoing Custodianship of Islamic and Christian Holy Sites in Jerusalem

His Majesty King Abdullah II and Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah met on Tuesday with His Holiness Pope Leo XIV at the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican.

During the meeting, His Majesty reaffirmed Jordan’s commitment to preserving and caring for Christian religious sites in the Kingdom, particularly the Baptism Site of Jesus Christ (Bethany Beyond the Jordan).

The meeting — the first between His Majesty and Pope Leo XIV since His Holiness’ inauguration — highlighted the strong relations between Jordan and the Vatican and explored ways to advance cooperation in achieving peace and promoting the values of tolerance and dialogue.

His Majesty extended an invitation to His Holiness to visit the Baptism Site of Jesus Christ in Jordan.

His Majesty stressed Jordan’s continued religious and historical role in safeguarding Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem under the Hashemite Custodianship, warning against ongoing Israeli violations against these sanctuaries.

On the situation in Gaza, His Majesty underscored the need to ensure the full implementation of the Gaza war ceasefire agreement and the delivery of sufficient humanitarian aid to all areas of the Strip.

The King reiterated that the only path to peace and stability in the region lies in the two-state solution, which guarantees the establishment of an independent Palestinian state and prosperity for the peoples of the region.

The meeting, attended by His Royal Highness Prince Ghazi bin Muhammad, Chief Adviser to His Majesty for Religious and Cultural Affairs and His Majesty’s Personal Envoy, also addressed joint efforts to promote peace and security in the region and the world.
