Jordan’s Minister of Agriculture, Saeb Khreisat, said on Tuesday that selecting the right tree species requires clear criteria that take into account the climate and location, noting that some planted species are unsuitable for certain areas, while others require large amounts of water or shed heavy amounts of foliage.

Speaking during a meeting of the Parliamentary Environment and Climate Committee, Khreisat said some forest trees can damage sidewalks, fences and other structures because of their spreading roots, and may affect the foundations of some buildings. This makes selecting appropriate species essential to successful tree-planting efforts.
He stressed the importance of ensuring that afforestation and tree-planting projects rely on species capable of surviving for decades without causing negative effects on surrounding areas, while also raising public awareness about the importance of choosing suitable trees.
Khreisat said the Ministry of Agriculture had launched an initiative to plant 11 million trees by 2030, with around 4 million trees already planted. Municipalities have planted approximately 250,000 trees since the beginning of the year, he added.
Khreisat emphasized the need to expand green areas and increase tree-planting efforts while selecting species suited to local climate conditions and the nature of each location, ensuring that they do not create obstacles or disruptions to public life.
