Weather forecaster Tareq Al-Sharaan of the Jordan Meteorological Department told Al-Mamlaka that the unstable conditions are expected to peak Sunday afternoon and into the evening, with their effects continuing through Monday.

Satellite and radar images showed developing convective and thunderclouds moving from southern Jordan toward the northeast, accompanied by moderate to heavy rainfall in parts of Tafileh, Karak and eastern Ma’an.

According to the Jordan Meteorological Department, limited areas of northern Jordan may also receive rain showers. Winds will be southeasterly and moderate, occasionally becoming active with strong gusts that may raise dust in the Badia.

Al-Sharaan warned people against approaching flood channels and low-lying areas and urged caution during thunderstorms.

At night, the weather will be pleasant in most areas and moderate in the Jordan Valley, Dead Sea and Aqaba. Clouds will appear at various altitudes, with scattered rain showers remaining possible in parts of southern and eastern Jordan and limited central areas. Rain may be heavy for short periods in eastern areas and occasionally accompanied by thunder.

Municipalities Raise Alert Levels

As part of preparations to deal with the weather conditions, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Local Administration Walid Al-Masri instructed municipalities, joint services councils and municipal affairs directorates to raise their preparedness levels to the highest level, particularly in eastern and southern areas.

Al-Masri stressed the need to monitor early-warning system reports and maintain continuous coordination with administrative governors, Civil Defense and other relevant authorities to respond to any emergencies resulting from rainfall.

He also called for residents, particularly those living near valleys, as well as livestock owners, to be warned about potential flash floods and urged authorities to take precautionary measures to protect lives and property.

Meanwhile, Public Works and Housing Ministry spokesperson Omar Al-Maharmah said field teams and machinery would remain on standby around the clock in the southern governorates over the next two days to respond to any emergencies caused by the weather.

Al-Maharmah told Al-Mamlaka that the ministry had prepared 108 field teams equipped with 138 vehicles, in addition to 200 vehicles from the private sector placed on standby, bringing the total available vehicles to 338.

He said rainfall across Jordan over the past several hours had not required field intervention, despite being heavy in some southern areas.

The ministry also carried out dozens of rainwater drainage projects during the summer, including eight major projects in locations that had suffered damage during the previous rainy season.

Al-Maharmah said authorities would continue monitoring flood channels, valleys and culverts to ensure they are ready to handle the expected rainfall.

Warnings of Flash Floods and Slippery Roads

The Public Security Directorate renewed its call for citizens to exercise caution during the unstable weather, warning of sudden flash floods, reduced horizontal visibility and slippery roads caused by rainfall.

The directorate urged drivers to exercise particular caution on highways and in areas experiencing rain or dust, maintain sufficient distance between vehicles and stay away from valleys, flood channels and low-lying areas, especially in southern and eastern Jordan.

It also called on people never to attempt to cross flood channels under any circumstances and to stay away from open areas during thunderstorms and lightning, while following preventive instructions issued by the relevant authorities.

The directorate stressed the importance of calling the unified emergency number 911 when necessary to report accidents or situations requiring emergency assistance.

The National Center for Security and Crisis Management also urged residents to take necessary precautions during the unstable weather affecting Jordan and follow safety instructions to avoid risks caused by heavy rain and dust.

The center stressed the need to stay away from valley sides, flood-prone areas and low-lying locations, as well as avoid approaching valleys and areas where water accumulates due to the risk of falling into them.

It also urged drivers to exercise caution in areas experiencing heavy dust and reduced visibility, and to drive slowly on roads expected to receive heavy rainfall.

The center warned against attempting to cross flooded roads on foot or by vehicle if water levels rise, stressing the importance of following instructions from the relevant authorities to protect public safety.
