The director-general of the General Union of Jordanian Farmers, engineer Mahmoud Al-Awaran, has urged citizens to buy this season's olive oil only from trusted sources, warning that some traders exploit the harvest period each year to defraud consumers.

Al-Awaran told the Jordan News Agency (Petra) that some citizens fall victim to the greed of individuals who falsely claim to be farm owners or olive oil distributors. He cautioned specifically against people operating near olive presses who claim to have already pressed their olives and are selling the oil as a fresh product.
He stressed that presses will not begin operating until after the middle of the current month, and only following an authorisation from the Ministry of Agriculture.
Al-Awaran also called for a mechanism to regulate Tunisian olive oil circulating in local markets, to prevent it from being repacked into new containers and sold as a domestic product. He urged monitoring of misleading advertisements on some satellite channels and social media platforms that offer local-variety olive oil at prices he described as implausible - between 50 and 60 dinars per tin.
He explained that the actual cost to a farmer for a tin of olive oil ranges from 75 to 80 dinars, making prices in that lower range impossible to achieve legitimately.
