The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities and the Greater Amman Municipality have begun preparation and development work in downtown Amman as part of the Amman Cable Car project, which aims to boost tourism, improve the urban environment and connect several tourist sites and landmarks across the capital.

In a joint statement, the ministry and municipality said the buildings included in the preparation and demolition works are not classified as heritage or archaeological structures and are located outside the main historic markets.
They stressed that preserving Amman's archaeological and architectural heritage and the identity of downtown remains a key priority in the development plans.
The two entities said the properties and buildings covered by the works are owned by the Greater Amman Municipality and are not privately owned. As a result, the current works do not require any new compensation payments or expropriation.
The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities and the Greater Amman Municipality said they are operating in accordance with the Urban and Architectural Heritage Protection Law No. 5 of 2005. Heritage buildings have been identified and documented, with eligible structures listed in the Urban and Architectural Heritage Register.
They confirmed that the Amman Cable Car project will not affect any building officially registered in the heritage buildings and sites register.
The ministry and municipality also said demolition and preparation areas are undergoing the necessary technical procedures and inspections by the relevant authorities, including the Department of Antiquities, to ensure that the sites contain no archaeological remains.
If any indications or archaeological discoveries emerge during the works, the relevant legal and technical procedures will be followed, they added.
The two entities said the cable car project forms part of an integrated vision for developing downtown Amman and is not intended to replace its historic markets and landmarks. Instead, it aims to strengthen connections between them, facilitate visitor access to the heart of the city and offer tourists a new perspective of Amman.
Once completed, the Amman Cable Car is expected to provide a significant addition to the capital's tourism offering, as part of a broader vision to transform downtown into an integrated tourist destination that combines the area's heritage with the requirements of modern development.
