2023 inflation: Prices rise 2.08%, December records 1.64% increase

AMMAN — On Friday, the Department of Statistics (DoS) released its monthly report on the annual Consumer Price Index (inflation) for 2023, revealing a 2.08 percent increase compared to 2022. Meanwhile, it added that consumer prices for December recorded an increase of 1.64 percent compared to the same month in 2022, with a slight 0.23 percent increase compared to November 2023.اضافة اعلان

Furthermore, the 2023 annual Consumer Price Index reached 109.02, compared to 106.79 in 2022. For December 2023, the index was 109.82, up from 108.05 in December 2022, and 109.82 compared to 109.56 for the preceding month in 2023, as reported by Al-Ghad.

In terms of commodity groups, "Fuel and Lighting" played a significant role in the 2023 inflation with a 5.76 percent increase, along with "Dairy and Eggs" at 5.70 percent, "Personal Luggage" at 4.94 percent, "Culture and Entertainment" at 4.37 percent, and "Rentals" at 4.10 percent. Conversely, groups like "Vegetables and Legumes" decreased by 7.88 percent, "Clothing" by 1.01 percent, "Fruits and Nuts" by 0.83 percent, and "Beverages" by 0.76 percent.

Key commodity groups contributing to the December 2023 inflation compared to the same month in 2022 include "Water and Sanitation" at 7.34 percent, "Personal Luggage" at 6.49 percent, "Union Contributions" at 5.86 percent, "Tobacco and Cigarettes" at 5.21 percent, and "Meat and Poultry" at 4.70 percent.

Notable commodity groups contributing to the rise in the annual Consumer Price Index for December 2023 compared to November 2023 include "Water and Sanitation" at 7.34 percent, "Union Contributions" at 5.86 percent "Meat and Poultry" at 1.99 percent, "Personal Luggage" at 1.88 percent, and "Rentals" at 1.87 percent.
