American nutritionist Dr. Sarah Prato highlights garlic as one of the best and most beneficial spices for kidney health.
According to Dr. Prato, garlic is exceptionally beneficial for kidney function due to its allicin content—a compound formed when garlic cells are mechanically crushed, which also gives the herb its distinctively pungent aroma, as reported by EatingWell.

The expert points out that allicin possesses potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, helping reduce inflammation and oxidative stress—two key factors associated with an increased risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD).
On her part, nephrologist Dr. Raeda Giewala notes that the benefits of garlic extend beyond its direct impact on the kidneys. Allicin also stimulates the production of nitric oxide, which helps dilate blood vessels and lower blood pressure. This plays a critical role in kidney protection, as hypertension damages blood vessels and impairs kidney function over time.
"Regular consumption of garlic may contribute to lowering the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes—both of which are major risk factors for developing chronic kidney disease," Dr. Giewala says.
According to health experts, garlic is not a cure and should not replace prescribed medical treatment; rather, it should be incorporated into the daily diet as part of a healthy, balanced lifestyle.
