Brighton fought back through Maliki Yalcouyé and a João Pedro own goal, before Cole Palmer restored Chelsea's lead with a fine finish. Pascal Groß pulled one back for Brighton with a header in stoppage time.

Chelsea started new signing Emiliano Martínez in goal in place of Robert Sánchez, and have now scored seven goals while conceding five across their opening two league games. Alonso, whose side face Arsenal next week, said he wants to win "whatever it takes," acknowledging defensive improvements are still needed despite the attacking firepower on display.
Elsewhere: Brentford were held 1-1 by Leeds United despite dominating with 22 shots on target — Kevin Schade's fine strike was cancelled out by Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Sunderland picked up their first points of the season, beating Fulham 1-0 through substitute Wilson Isidor. Manchester United got their first win of the campaign, thrashing Ipswich Town 5-2 with a Bruno Fernandes hat-trick. The round concludes Monday when defending champions Arsenal visit Aston Villa.
