Bayern had hoped to capitalise on rivals Borussia Dortmund dropping points after they drew 2-2 with Werder Bremen the previous day, but they faced a determined Augsburg side that took the lead twice before the teams settled for a share of the points.
Belgian coach Vincent Kompany made just one change to the lineup that secured a convincing win over Union Berlin before the international break, bringing in Ismail Saibari in place of Jamal Musiala, who sustained an injury while on duty with the German national team.
Augsburg, meanwhile, made four changes to their lineup compared with their previous match. The game also marked Juma Bah’s first appearance for the club, while Young-woo Seol made his first Bundesliga start.
Historic goal in under nine seconds
Augsburg could hardly have asked for a better start, needing less than nine seconds to open the scoring through Robin Fellhauer, who made Bundesliga history by scoring the fastest goal in the competition.
The move began with Bayern taking the kickoff before the ball was played back to goalkeeper Manuel Neuer. Neuer attempted to lift the ball over Fellhauer as the Augsburg player rushed towards him, but his effort failed. Fellhauer seized possession and raced towards goal to put the hosts ahead.
The early goal came as a shock to Bayern, who responded by dominating possession and applying sustained pressure on the hosts’ defence.
Bayern created several chances through English striker Harry Kane and French winger Michael Olise, but Augsburg’s defence remained organised and managed to repel their attacks.
At the other end, Augsburg nearly doubled their lead when the ball fell to Juma Bah amid confusion in front of goal, but he sent his close-range effort over the crossbar.
In the closing moments of the first half, Bayern came close to equalising when Kane rose to meet a cross from Aleksandar Pavlovic and directed the ball towards goal, only for it to strike the crossbar.
Augsburg went into the break leading 1-0, despite Bayern’s clear advantage in possession and chance creation.
Bayern continued their attacking pressure at the start of the second half, seeking a goal to bring them back into the contest. The visitors found the net through Luis Díaz, but the goal was ruled out for offside as Bayern continued to search for an equaliser.
In the 55th minute, Ismail Saibari levelled the score after converting a pass from Harry Kane, bringing Bayern back into the match.
Bayern appeared to have regained the initiative, but Augsburg refused to back down and restored their lead just nine minutes later.
In the 64th minute, Calvin Brackelmann unleashed a low shot that Neuer saved. The rebound fell in front of Rodrigo Ribeiro, who calmly followed up to put the ball into the net and give Augsburg a 2-1 lead.
Bayern were once again forced to chase the game and intensified their attacks in search of an equaliser, but they were caught offside again, resulting in two more goals being disallowed.
As the match approached its conclusion, Bayern finally turned their pressure into a second goal when Nathaniel Brown equalised in the 80th minute.
The goal followed an attack down the left involving Harry Kane and Aleksandar Pavlovic, before the ball reached Brown, who finished from close range.
Bayern were not content with the draw and continued to push forward in the closing minutes in search of a winner and all three points.
Serge Gnabry came close to securing victory for the visitors with a shot that struck the post, while Augsburg goalkeeper Finn Dahmen made several more important saves to preserve the draw until the final whistle.
