Sky News reported that Bezos is part of an investor group led by Amit Bhatia, the son-in-law of Indian steel billionaire Lakshmi Mittal, and also including Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin.

Liverpool owner Fenway Sports Group confirmed last month that it had received an offer from Bhatia’s group.

A spokesperson for the group told AFP: “An investment consortium led, managed and represented by Amit Bhatia has expressed interest in making a strategic investment through a minority stake in Liverpool Football Club.”

Bhatia was until recently a shareholder in Queens Park Rangers, who compete in the English Championship.

Sky News reported that the consortium is “close to reaching an agreement to acquire a stake of around one-third in Liverpool,” with Fenway Sports Group potentially announcing the deal “as early as this week.”

Bezos, 62, is one of the world’s richest people, with Forbes estimating his fortune at more than $280 billion. Saverin’s wealth is estimated at around $33 billion.

Bezos had previously considered bids to buy the Seattle Seahawks and Washington Commanders of the National Football League (NFL), but ultimately decided not to proceed with either deal.

Sky News added that the potential Liverpool investment would value the club, 20-time English league champions, at around $6 billion.

Fenway Sports Group, which also owns Major League Baseball’s Boston Red Sox, bought Liverpool in 2010 for £300 million ($405 million).

In 2023, the group sold a minority stake in the club to U.S. private investment firm Dynasty Equity.

Liverpool won the Premier League title in the 2024/2025 season under Dutch manager Arne Slot, who was dismissed in May following a turbulent campaign.
