According to NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman, the agency is accelerating its work and reviewing technical requirements to meet the established timeline.
“We are giving Artemis IV the best possible chance of safely and successfully returning Americans to the lunar surface in 2028. When American astronauts take their first steps on the Moon in 2028, a rover and the first elements of a permanent human presence will be waiting for them,” Isaacman said in press statements.
Meanwhile, Jeremy Parsons, NASA’s Artemis programme manager, said development of lunar landers is progressing in parallel at two contracted private companies: Elon Musk’s SpaceX and Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin.
“We have been intensely focused within the Artemis team on making progress, with the goal of actually reaching the lunar surface within the established 2028 timeline,” Parsons said.
He added that NASA would wait as long as possible before deciding which company would transport the crew to the lunar surface, noting that both companies are working towards achieving a landing in 2028.
