The volume of non-performing loans (NPLs) held by banks edged up during the first half of this year compared with the end of 2025, reaching 5.6%, up from 5.5% during the comparison period.

In absolute terms, non-performing debt, excluding interest, rose to approximately JOD 1.988 billion, compared with JOD 1.916 billion at the end of 2025. During the same period, banks’ legal liquidity ratio increased to approximately 144.7%.

The coverage ratio for non-performing loans increased to 77.3% from January through the end of June, compared with 75.7% in the second half of last year. Meanwhile, the portion of non-performing loans not covered by provisions relative to shareholders’ equity fell to around 5.5%, from 5.7%.

The banking sector recorded profits of approximately JOD 471 million during the first six months of the current year, while pre-tax profits reached JOD 626 million. By comparison, full-year profits stood at JOD 683 million last year, with pre-tax profits reaching approximately JOD 942 million.

The figures also showed that deposit growth reached 2.2% during the first half of the current year, a clear slowdown from the 7.1% growth recorded during the second half of last year.

Meanwhile, the growth rate of credit facilities also declined, falling from 3.6% in the second half of 2025 to 3% during the first half of the current year.
