Madrid Mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida told reporters late Tuesday, about 10 hours after the collapse, that rescue teams had recovered one body and were working to retrieve a second, which had been located. “Two people are still unaccounted for,” he said.

He explained that the first body recovered was that of a man, while it was still unclear whether the second body found but not yet retrieved belonged to a man or a woman.

Deputy Mayor Inmaculada Sanz said the victims—two dead and two missing—were three men and one woman.

According to Spanish media, the woman was the project engineer, while the three men were construction workers.

The collapse also left several people injured, including one who was taken to the hospital.

Francisco Martín Aguirre, Governor of the Madrid region, told reporters that “the roof of one floor collapsed, causing the subsequent collapse of the other floors down to the basement. The damage is extremely severe, and potential impact on neighboring buildings is also being assessed.”

The mayor added that the collapse began with the floor of the sixth story, which gave way and brought down the remaining levels to the ground floor.

The accident occurred around 1:30 p.m. on a street in central Madrid, near the famous tourist landmark Plaza Mayor.

The building was undergoing renovation to be converted into a four-star hotel.
