Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said Thursday that his government had summoned the Moroccan ambassador in Madrid to protest remarks made by two Moroccan ministers concerning the cities of Ceuta and Melilla, describing the statements as “unacceptable.”

Speaking during a session of the Spanish Parliament on the crisis involving the mass influx of migrants into Ceuta, Sánchez said Spanish intelligence agencies had so far found no evidence that government entities, including Morocco, Russia or Israel, were behind social media posts encouraging migrants to attempt to cross the border into the city.
He added that there was “no evidence” that the crossing into Ceuta had been planned or carried out by Moroccan authorities, stressing that the information available to Spanish agencies did not establish any involvement by the Moroccan government in the events.
The Spanish prime minister stressed that cooperation between Madrid and Rabat would continue, as the Spanish government faces political pressure to investigate the circumstances surrounding the large influx of migrants into Ceuta on July 30 and 31.
More than 72,000 migrants crossed irregularly from Morocco into Ceuta during the crisis, according to the latest Spanish figures, while Spanish authorities returned more than 90% of them.
