According to the sources, the Al-Zaytoun ambush resulted in the death of one occupation soldier and the injury of 11 others with varying degrees of wounds, amid growing fears that four soldiers may have been captured. Israeli military censorship imposed a publishing ban regarding details of their fate.

In an attempt to prevent soldiers from being taken captive, the occupation army announced that it had activated the “Hannibal Protocol,” a procedure that authorizes bombing locations where missing soldiers may be present—even if it risks killing them—in order to prevent their capture by the resistance.

The Hebrew sources also indicated that occupation forces launched airstrikes around Al-Zaytoun neighborhood and fired intensive illumination flares to secure their withdrawal, while one soldier reported hearing voices over communication devices believed to belong to the missing soldiers.

According to Israeli media, direct face-to-face clashes broke out between Hamas fighters and occupation troops inside the neighborhood, forcing the army to decide on withdrawal after sustaining losses and facing difficulty in holding its ground in the area.
