Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov expressed hope on Thursday that Syrian President Ahmad Al-Sharaa will participate in the first Russia-Arab Summit, scheduled to be held in Moscow next October.

Lavrov's remarks came during a meeting with his Syrian counterpart Asaad Al-Shaibani in the Russian capital.
For his part, Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shaibani said from Moscow:
"We represent the new Syria and seek to build a proper relationship with Russia."
He added: "There are many opportunities for a unified and strong Syria, and we hope Russia will stand with us along this path."
Russia and the Syrian government are currently holding talks regarding Moscow’s hopes to continue operating its naval and air bases in northwestern Syria.
