The Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Assad Al-Shaybani, stated on Thursday that the Syrian government is working to overcome the legacy of the previous regime regarding relations with Lebanon, emphasizing that the visit translates to a stance of support for the Lebanese government and its people.

During a joint press conference with Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam in Beirut, Al-Shaybani stressed that the visit reflects support and a healthy relationship with Lebanon.
He pointed out that the joint Lebanese-Syrian committee will take charge of developing economic cooperation and security understandings between the two nations.
Al-Shaybani also affirmed that the file of any agreement with Israel remains a sovereign decision to be made by the Lebanese government.
For his part, Salam stated that Beirut and Damascus have re-established their relations on the basis of mutual interests, noting that he discussed ways to enhance economic cooperation between the two countries with Al-Shaybani.
He indicated that an agreement was signed to form a joint Lebanese-Syrian higher committee aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation between the two countries, noting that this committee will include several ministers and will work toward boosting cooperation.
