According to Israeli media reports, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gave the green light for the bill’s approval. The committee has passed it and referred it to the Knesset plenum for discussion and voting in the next legislative stages, with a vote expected this coming Wednesday.
A parliamentary committee had already approved the same bill on September 29, paving the way for its first reading.
The legislation is part of the coalition agreements reached at the end of 2022 between Netanyahu’s Likud Party and Itamar Ben-Gvir’s Otzma Yehudit (Jewish Power) Party.
Hamas Condemns the Move
The Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) strongly condemned on Monday the approval of the bill by the Knesset’s National Security Committee, describing it as a reflection of the “ugly fascist face of the rogue Zionist occupation.”
In a press statement, Hamas said the move represents a “blatant violation of international law,” particularly the provisions of international humanitarian law and the Third Geneva Convention, which govern the treatment of prisoners of war.
Calls for Urgent International Action
Hamas urged the United Nations, the international community, and human rights and humanitarian organizations to act immediately to stop what it called “this barbaric crime.”
The movement also called for the formation of international committees to visit Israeli prisons and examine the conditions of Palestinian detainees, in order to expose the atrocities being committed under official Israeli supervision.
Reference to ‘Sde Teiman’ Abuses
Hamas linked its urgent appeal to what it described as “horrific violations” currently taking place against prisoners, stressing the need for immediate intervention, “especially in light of recent leaks and the footage revealing acts of torture and sexual assault in the fascist Sde Teiman detention camp.”
The movement concluded by calling for the “immediate release of all Palestinian prisoners.”
