Two Israeli soldiers were killed in the Gaza Strip on Thursday in an accidental explosion involving an Israeli drone, a military official said Friday.
The official, who requested anonymity, said the two soldiers were injured when an Israeli drone that had crashed near a military position in Gaza exploded.
The official said the two soldiers “approached the drone before it exploded shortly afterward,” adding that their deaths were announced at a hospital.
The military identified the soldiers as Nadav Kali, 24, and Ofek Malam, 23.
The deaths bring to 970 the number of Israeli soldiers killed in Gaza since the war began following Hamas’ October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, which resulted in more than 1,200 deaths.
Seven of those soldiers have been killed since a ceasefire took effect last year.
