Music publishing arms of Sony Music and Warner Music have filed a lawsuit against Anthropic in a federal court in California, accusing the artificial intelligence company of misusing their copyrighted musical works to train its Claude AI models.

Sony and Warner said in the lawsuit, filed Friday, that Anthropic had allegedly taken hundreds of song lyrics and musical compositions by The Beatles, Taylor Swift, Michael Jackson and hundreds of other artists to train Claude to respond to human prompts.
The lawsuit is the latest in a series of cases brought against technology companies by copyright holders, including authors, publishers, music production companies and media organizations, over the use of their works to train artificial intelligence systems, according to Reuters.
Universal Music Group sued Anthropic in 2023 and again earlier this year, alleging that the company used copyrighted song lyrics to train its AI systems. Those lawsuits remain pending.
Anthropic became the first AI company to settle one of these disputes last year, when it agreed to pay $1.5 billion to settle a class-action lawsuit brought by a group of authors.
An Anthropic spokesperson said Monday: “This is the third lawsuit brought by the same lawyers, who are recycling claims from cases already before the courts.”
The spokesperson added that the company would defend itself “vigorously” and maintained that AI training makes fair use of copyrighted material.
