The feature is part of a series of updates released for ChatGPT on August 21. According to OpenAI’s official release notes, users can now press and hold the “+” button next to the message field to open their recent photos and select one to attach to a conversation. Access to the feature requires permission for ChatGPT to access the user’s photos.

Long Press Cuts Several Steps

Previously, attaching a photo required users to tap the “+” button, select Photos, and then search through their photo library for the desired image.

With the new shortcut, users can simply press and hold the “+” button to bring up their four most recent photos, allowing them to select and attach an image directly to the conversation.

Adam Fry, OpenAI’s consumer product lead, highlighted the feature in the company’s August 21 weekly update, describing the shortcut as a useful feature for power users.

The change may appear minor, but it reflects the growing role of images in interactions with AI assistants. Instead of describing an object, problem or document in detail, users can simply take a photo and ask ChatGPT to analyze or explain it.

The shortcut can be particularly useful for sharing:

A photo of an unfamiliar object for identification.
A screenshot when seeking help with a problem.
A product photo for information or analysis.
A document or text for review.
A technical issue that requires visual explanation.

In many of these situations, the most recently captured photos are likely to be the ones users want to share, making quicker access particularly convenient.

OpenAI Continues Improving Photos on iPhone

The new shortcut does not introduce a new AI model or change ChatGPT’s existing image-analysis capabilities. Instead, it streamlines the process of adding photos to conversations.

OpenAI’s release notes also mention clearer connection-status messages in the iOS app. The same week brought other improvements, including better awareness of the user’s local time and more efficient loading of long conversations on the web.

The new photo shortcut is therefore primarily a user-experience improvement, reducing the number of steps required to share a recently captured image with ChatGPT.
