Google Vids can now turn documents, including PDF, Word, and Google Docs files, into video summaries that include voiceover narration and a curated selection of visuals.
What Does the Document-to-Video Feature Do?
Google has added a new option to the file menu within Google Vids called "Docs to Video."
The feature allows users to import a document directly from Google Drive or from their computer, after which AI analyzes the document's content and generates text summarizing its key points as bullet points, then adds a voiceover to the video.
Before creating the final version, users can review the AI-generated script and rewrite specific parts of it, or choose a different voice for the narration.
After finishing these edits, Google Vids assembles all the elements together, adding AI-generated images and backgrounds to produce the final video.
This idea may sound familiar, as Google's NotebookLM also offers a similar capability to turn documents into visual content using AI.
The article's author, who deals daily with dozens of press releases and text-heavy presentations and emails, says he expects users will figure out how to make the most of this feature once they get access to it.
The most obvious use case is the ability to skip reading an entire document, whether it's meeting notes or training material the user doesn't have time to read in full.
The second, and perhaps more important, benefit is that using visuals and voiceover narration makes absorbing a document's content less monotonous.
When Is the Feature Available, and Does It Actually Work?
Despite how useful the feature appears, there is a limitation regarding its availability to users.
The service is only available to subscribers of Google AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra plans, in addition to users subscribed to Business, Enterprise, and Education plans.
The feature's rollout timing varies depending on the type of user account.
It has already become available to accounts within the Rapid Release tracks, while it will begin reaching users within the Scheduled Release tracks starting September 5, 2026, with the rollout expected to be complete within the following two weeks.
However, the experience doesn't yet appear fully stable.
During testing conducted by Android Authority, the tool was able to generate the required script for the video, but it repeatedly encountered an error when trying to output the final video.
The article notes that such issues aren't surprising for a new feature that relies on multimodal AI and attempts to perform several tasks at once.
As a result, the feature may not work correctly on the first try for all users.
