Google continues integrating more of its services with artificial intelligence, after announcing that its personal agent Gemini Sparks is now able to manage users' libraries in Google Photos.

This means users can ask Gemini Sparks to carry out a range of tasks within Google Photos, such as editing photos, organizing albums, automatically creating shared albums containing favorite photos, converting photos of event flyers into calendar appointments, and carrying out other tasks and workflows.
On Thursday evening, Shimrit Ben-Yair, who oversees Google Photos, shared details of the new capabilities in a post on X, explaining that these features will start rolling out over the coming weeks to eligible subscribers on the Gemini AI Pro and Ultra plans in the United States, in English.
The company did not clarify whether it plans to expand the rollout of these features to international markets, or when that might happen.
This update is another example of Google's efforts to find practical uses that make artificial intelligence more appealing to consumers, by automating tedious tasks and helping users manage photo libraries that have become, for many, extremely large.
This step comes at a time when the AI industry faces the reality that it has not yet succeeded in convincingly delivering the promised benefits of this technology to consumers.
This week, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman told Bloomberg that the industry had done a very poor job explaining the technology's benefits, which he said contributed to negative reactions from communities in various parts of the world.
Announcements of this kind from Google are also seen as part of the same problem. While they may make certain tasks easier, these features on their own don't seem revolutionary, or even necessarily essential — putting together a photo album, for instance, isn't an especially difficult task to begin with.
But the intensity of competition within the AI industry is pushing companies to promote every AI-related update, however minor, rather than waiting until they can present a broader vision explaining how AI has genuinely improved their software and products.
To use Gemini Sparks with Google Photos, users first need to link Google Photos to the Gemini app, then activate Sparks from the top corner of the Gemini app, and then enter the desired command.
