Croatia's Marin Cilić crashed out of the Cincinnati Open in the first round following a defeat to Spain's Daniel Mérida Aguilar, 6-3, 1-6, 1-6, in a match held on Friday evening (Saturday morning GMT).

The Spanish player, ranked World No. 40, took 100 minutes to overcome Cilić, who is ranked World No. 85.
With this loss, Cilić made an early exit from the only ATP Masters 1000 tournament he has won in his career, back in 2016. Cilić has captured 21 career titles, including the US Open.
In other men's matches, Portugal's Jaime Faria defeated American Jenson Brooksby 6-3, 6-2, while American Aleksander Kovacevic upset Russia's Karen Khachanov 5-7, 6-3, 7-6.
In the women's singles, American Sofia Kenin defeated Germany's Eva Lys 1-6, 6-3, 6-3, while American Sloane Stephens beat Austria's Sinja Kraus 7-5, 6-3. Meanwhile, Czech Republic's Tereza Valentová defeated American Mary Stoiana 6-2, 7-6.
